I remade the deb package from the same sources on a currently updated system with no change. Removing '--enable-static' from debian/rules resulted a working 'tripwire --init'. Hope it helps someone else. Brief notes (I was building on 'nebula' and running on 'muggle2'). search for the amd64 pack
