A better guess, I'm not sure why it did not occur to me before. If you resize below what is required to display the buddy icon, it will be increased. This should apply only to conversations, and not chats though (chats are more than 2 people) -- dimensions of the log and input boxes in chatwind

I just tried this out on Edgy (gaim 2.0.0beta3.1) and, when making the "input box" larger than the default size, gaim seems to remember the dimensions after I close a chat window. If I resize the input box to be smaller than the default size, gaim seems to *not remember* the size, and resets the s
