I had to attach another disk and use safe graphics mode to get the live
cd installer to start into the desktop after which I collected the above
information.
If I do not use the another disk (that is try with the 3 SATA disks on
the ICH9 RAID) it fails to boot and all that I can see on the screen

Yep, the display bug looks surely looks like it is covered in 147623.
So we'll let this bug track the disk errors and failure to boot which
clearly are unrelated to the display issue.
