just to clarify, the problem is that there are no shadows at all (not

It was the 169.12 from nvidia.com. Didn't try it anymore because it
caused low resolution settings when I didn't save a profile in "screens
and graphic" (don't know what's its name in English).

To me, it seems to be a bug in the NVidia drivers in the repos. Didn't
try the original ones for some weeks, but with them working the shadows
were black as they should.

this bug is still present with my fully up to date hardy 64bit install ,
in fact it just appeared a couple of days ago for me along with a couple
of other glitches , and seems to be connected to them , my custom title
bar setup does not take effect on boot , I use compiz with the gtk
window decorat

The pink shadows on menus are gone now. Must have been one of the
updates since that removed them.
They were replaced by a golden orange glow/shadow around top-level
application windows.
Disturbingly, this glow also comes and goes with no discernible pattern.
