I've the same problem with Ubuntu 8.10 on AMD64 and OpenOffice 2.4.1; it seemes
that OO hangs when I change the default length of a field.
The Ubuntu package is openoffice.org 2.4.1-11ubuntu2.1
It is a serious problem; I can't use OO Base at all.

I can't reproduce this bug on Ubuntu hardy (8.04) OpenOffice.org
2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3. Can you please upgrade and let me know if this fixes
your problem?
