I actually got it working for me, kind of.
I played a lot with hald and dbus ( sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart etc.) and
managed to fuck up gnome. After restarting X the DVD actually mounted (I think

Allso happens to me, when trying to access "CD-RW/DVD+-RW Drive" from
Places menu. Allso Gnome doesn't auto-mount dvd's for me, but sees them
when I mount them manually. I have
/dev/scd0/media/cdrom
