as I supposed, you have an X-series ATI video card and the "ati open driver" is
badly broken when using compiz and (in general) X composite extension for this
kind of hardware.
I have an ATI X700 and I'm having the same problem described by you (X freezes
but mouse still moving).

I tried the fglrx driver to find out why I don't use it.
The answer is quite simple: It does not work with my video card (the X server
refuses to start).
Yet, the fglrx driver is suggested as the "proprietary driver" to use...

Indeed, my video card is an ATI RV380 [Radeon X600 SE] with 128MB of memory.
My PC is a Dell Optiplex GX620 with a Pentium 4 (3Ghz) CPU, 1GB DDR-II RAM and
a SATA hard drive of 80GB.
The video driver I currently use is "ati". I think I tried the fglrx driver
before but I can't remember
