I have no idea as to what caused the issue but it occured in all the ISO's for
sevreal days.
Must be as you suggest a "transitory problem" - of course we will see if it
re-occurs.

So this is a non-issue, like the Lubuntu one, too? Perhaps this was
really a transitory problem in the state of packages overall and not due
to a software update mechanism at all.

Tested latest daily ISO's dated 21.11.2020 for
Xubuntu Hirsute,Ubuntu Hiruste,Ubuntu Mate Hirusute - all ran the software
updater successfully with no errors.
