I have spent countless hours over the past few days following every set
of instructions on this page (and many others), but so far nothing has
worked.
Is there any hope that this is just going to work someday?

Can't compile ov
All I get is a "FATAL: Module ov51x_jpeg not found" error when I run
modprobe on it. I had made the file and this is the output:

Positive reports, although it doesn't seem to be perfect yet it fixes
the originally reported problem ("can't compile"). Moved to hardy-
updates. Please file new bugs for other problems.

I solved the problem!
for Intrepid you must use ov51x-jpeg-1.5.9 not 1.5.8, after that you'll
have to remove ov511
sudo rm -r /lib/modules/2.6.27-7-generic/kernel/ubuntu/misc/media/ov511
now you'll be able to compile ov51x-jpeg but you are not finished, yet...
Intrepid uses by default gspc
The module now in backports for Hardy works fine for me. The original
built-in hardy package gave me the same error as the reporter above.

Thanks for testing. It is worrying that the driver no longer works for you.
I'd like a little more information to help understand the problem.
What package were you using before? Were you using any extra
patches with the driver? Were you on hardy when it worked?

Same problem as David Hulgh-Jones. The new package fixed the compilation
problem, but the same webcame
is not recognized. The only dmesg lines related to it when it is pluged are:

I had the same problem compiling ov51x-jpeg, and the -proposed version
compiles for me. However, I can't yet get ekiga, skype or cheese to
recognize my (Creative Live! Notebook) webcam; will play around a bit
more.

Hi,
Is anyone else who was having this problem able to test the packages
from -proposed?
Testing it will help with getting the fix widely available for everyone
else that needs this driver to benefit from.

Tested for 2.6.24-19: success.
For building I have been using 'sudo make -C
/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/build M=/usr/src/modules/ov51x-jpeg
modules' (not module-assistant).

different one in a different package, and this makes it difficult to work
