I was able to install Butterfly's version of nvidia-340 with linux-5.8

I find that surprising because Ubuntu 20.10 ships with kernel 5.8 AND
supports nvidia-340:

Perhaps you're just stuck on some upgrade problems that would be fixed
with a fresh install of 20.10.

I followed your steps but just encountered the same errors I previously had. I
have both the kernel 5.4 and 5.8 installed, but nvidia-340 can't be installed
with the 5.8, and I am unable to login with the 5.8. I read elsewhere that
nvidia is no longer providing support for its legacy
drivers.
It appears an old Nvidia driver and an old kernel are installed. So it
sounds like the upgrade has not completed. Please try:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install linux-generic
sudo apt full-upgrade
then reboot and try installing the Nvidia driver again using the
'Additional Drivers' app.

better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privile
