This problem persists with Ubuntu 20.10 released today.
The modprobe/rmmod/modprobe method above still works there, however it
is very inconvenient to have to perform those steps after each reboot.

recommended to others for the last fou
FWIW, I do this dance after boot and the touchpad works...
➜ ~ sudo modprobe psmouse
[sudo] passord for ole:
➜ ~ sudo rmmod psmouse
➜ ~ sudo modprobe psmouse

grub, selecting 5.4.0-42 for the touchpad to work.

Kernel 5.4.0-48 fixes the problem. The TouchPad is recognized correctly

Same issue. Lenovo Thinkpad X1. Looks like it started with kernel version
5.4.0-45 and remains in 5.4.0-47. With 5.4.0-42 trackpad is listed as
↳ SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad
in xinput, with 5.4.0-45 and 5.4.0-47 it shows as
↳ Synaptics TM3418-002
according to Xorg.0.log same driver is loaded
