Yes, the safe graphics mode failed identically.
Granted, this is relatively old hardware. If this matter will not be worked
around in a release, it would be good to be in a release note somewhere
(perhaps this bug will suffice). I searched a great deal over the course of
more than a week to figure
GeForce 2 is no longer supported by nvidia-glx, but that shouldn't be
the issue, as the live CD does not contain the NVIDIA 3D drivers, only
the "nv" driver that should have support for the GeForce 2.
Did you try starting in the "safe graphics" mode?
