You're right, now I see that the suid bit is set not in
monitoring-plugins-basic package but by my "configuration manager".
Without suid bit icinga reports "Couldn't open device /dev/sda: Acces denied"

Hi and thanks for taking the time to report a bug. I don't think
check_ide_smart is supposed to have the suid bit set. I installed a
couple of older versions of the package:
monitoring-plugins-basic 2.2-3ubuntu2 on Bionic
monitoring-plugins-basic 2.1.2-2ubuntu2 on Xenial
