As an update, I tried distro upgrade to see if newer mainstream kernel
would have an impact. No effect, bug still remains:

This same bug affects me as well. It might of happened the last time I
updated but hard to say (I didn't notice right away)
I have several sound card/devices; NVIDIA 1080 graphics card, intel, and
a sound blaster, all of which are now gone. Running Ubuntu 20.04.2

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf additions fixed the problem.

This is an linux-firmware issue, it's been fixed in next linux-firmware update.
Currently, you can try copying origin firmware under /lib/firmware to make it
work
cd /lib/firmware/intel/sof
sudo ln -s sof-cnl.ri sof-cfl.ri

I tried options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=laptop-dmic in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, but it did not work for me.
I tried 5.0.0-1047-oem-osp1, but still not fixed.
Then I tried kernel parameter snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0, which fixes
the sound output, but the internal microphone now doesn't
I could not login with 5.0.0-1040-oem-osp1 except ubuntu with wayland
(still no sound) so I added following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-
base.conf
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=laptop-dmic
This setting works with 5.0.0-1043 and 46 kernels.
Unfortunately internal mic. does not work as other
not fixed with 5.0.0-1046-oem-osp1, reverting back to 5.0.0-1040-oem-
osp1

Booting 5.0.0-1040-oem-osp1 fixes the audio problem for me.
Both 5.0.0-1043-oem-osp1 and 5.3.0-42 have the problem.
