Running under Karmic alpha 4 AMD64 in a Virtualbox with compositing
enabled I see this issua, and also get bug 321041. Perhaps there is a
relation?

After some tests, I see the same error in VirtualBox with Ubuntu 9.04b2 x386.
After some investigation, the cause is (for both 9.04b2 x86 and amd64) the
presence of drm modules added by "virtual box guest additions" while the
checkbox "3D acceleration" is not ticked in VM preferences.

I have the same configuration and enviroment as mentioned by the user
Joachim R., but I'm using the free ATI driver by now and is OK until
now.

I just ran [update-manager -d] from 8.10, which installed a 9.04 (pre-
release). During the first system reboot after install, after grub it
tried to load the ubuntu progress meter, then resorted to the shell
showing all the daemons loading, took a while for the fglrx portion,
then prompted me that
FYI I have the same problem on my laptop with an ATI XPress 200M.
It was working flawlessly with intrepid Ibex.

Hi, it's still an issue here.
If I blank the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable all glx apps seems
to work fine (including Compiz).
If I blank out the LD_LIBRARY_PATH in all startup scripts the graphical
performance in X becomes really poor.

It happened after system Settings -> Desktop -> Multiple Desktops. I
just had a crash a few minutes ago trying to install the proprietary ATI
video driver.
