Sorry to re-open an old bug, not sure whether I should be doing this,
but I'm having this same issue on Ubuntu 10.04 x64.
I've just set up dual-monitors on a laptop with ATI graphics, and since
doing this, nautilus appears to hang on start up as the OP has
described. Can't right click on the wall
I don't have python scripts, btw., don't even have a python-extensions
directory, so it's probably not related to python scripts.

Hm. I think I got this situation now.
Nautilus doesn't start, even if I kill it away and it's relaunched.
Unfortunately nautilus -c doesn't yield anything useful and starting
from command-line doesn't do anything but hang as well...
Please consider re-opening this bug with a high priority, as eve

had the same problem. deleting the .gnome .gnome2 .gnome2_private and
.nautilus directories in the home folder and restarting the gnome
session fixed this for me.

I agree that it should at least be able to recognize this as a cause and
let the user know about it rather than just hanging. I forwarded it to

I don't know.
Nautilus shouldn't stop if there is a bad script in the extensions
dir(s). It might be wise to suggest it (or report it as a bug) to the
Nautilus guys, what do you think?

Problem solved!
I figured out that a python script that I placed in the
~/.nautilus/python-extensions dir made the problem appear.
Moving it from there solved the problem.
