This error can happen when there is a problem with your sendmail.cf: It seems that Debian's sendmailconfig doesn't properly handle errors in sendmail configuration files. For instance if there is a syntactic error and you see a message like: Creating /etc/mail/sendmail.cf... m4:/etc/mail/sendmail
