It seems like the problem was permissions and messed-up volume controls.
I am still puzzled why permissions changed and why volume changed on
their own...

The "Connection refused" errors were averted by adding myself into
"pulse-rt" group (sudo adduser $USER pulse-rt). However machine plays no
sound at all: no login prompt drums, no welcoming chimes, absolutely
nothing.
