Solved. After thinking about this a bit I went to
System/Preferences/Power Management and there is a check box to display
all the time or during charging etc.

I should also add I used the alternate CD to do the installation as the
live CD installation did not display and opening splash screen (black
screen with orange "Ubuntu" lettering and did not enable effects on the
ATI video card.
