Unattached from this bug being closed because of inactivity I tried
again the DisplayPort adapter under kernel 4.17.3. That didn't work at
all, screen blackouts blinking from the beginning.

I tried it with the latest 4.16 kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.16.3/ - it looks like the issue is gone with
that kernel. I had no problems using my display so far.
