and yes, it was a big step back for Xorg... what about some other
distros?, where there are no graphical tools to generate xorg.conf, and

In my system, dpkg-reconfigure doesn't provide a list of display
drivers. I can't select vesa, that I want to pick, because Ubuntu Hardy
simply hangs at the out-of-the-box configuration.
How to just pick vesa?!

No, it's not the answer at all. Even if it were, X is needed to run it,
and X is what I haven't got. I.e. there's a hole in my bucket. The
result is a dead machine, and no way of fixing it. The avenue of last
resort for the chronic and vexing problem of fixing X for troublesome
display configurati

I can confirm this, I'm using the 32 bit release of Hardy on an AMD64 machine
(software problems, my computer doesn't work much differently on 64-bit anyway)
and I've had the same problem. Fixed my screen resolution but thought I should
mention it - I'm using the Nvidia restricted driver like Ja
Same issue here with today's (2/23/08) daily build of Hardy for AMD64.
Fresh install, enable Nvidia restricted driver, run 'sudo dpkg-
reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg' immediately returns the post-install
warning about overwriting a customized xorg. Running dexconf directly
does reset the xorg.conf
I have a bug in the package xserver-xorg in hardy with kde4
The X session are going well but when you login in the kdm-kde4 restart
X session.
I have tested "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but I obtain the same error:
"xserver-xorg postinst warning: overwriting possibly-customised configuration
