The new profile seems to do the job. Thunderbird is much faster now.
I still have this feeling, though, that Thunderbird and Firefox are a
little slower in Ubuntu compared to my earlier Windows installation.

I too experience the same problem on the latest Ubuntu and its
Thunderbird on modern hardware. Thunderbird on Windows was blazing fast
in comparison. I haven't tested Thunderbird with a profile from scratch,
so far I've only been using the profile I've copied from Windows.
