The issue you describe isn't specifically related to Firefox. Holding
any package in synaptic will not stop an upgrade using apt or
unattended-upgrades. I believe the opposite also to be true, holding a
package with apt-mark won't stop synaptic upgrading it.

Related to #1586468
Today while surfing firefox 56 crash and after restart ver 57 jumps to
the screen. The firefox marked for hold version was updated without any
warning and way to stop that.
No firefox 57 is not a security upgrade from it's severe incompatibility
to previous versions.

Happens on ubuntumate 17.10 and ubuntustudio 17.10 the same way.
Why did this update without questioning the user? Do firefox itself
trigger the unattended update?
