I got a debug patch from the maintainers, but unfortunately I don't have
any experience in building the kernel. He also said that it was "based
on latest net-next kernel," which I assume is a different build

I've been able to install and use kernel 4.11.0-041100-generic
#201705041534 and the issue is still happening. It seems to take longer
for dmesg to log anything or for Network Manager to show that the
ethernet interface has been disconnected. The issue will still occur
within the first few minutes
