While the two issues could possibly be related, I don't think they are.
In fact, I've not had any problem with the sound controls changing but
not affecting the sound, or with the OSD that appears when the media
keys are utilized.

A little additional information: Further experimentation yielded that
this occurs anytime the volume indicator disappears. If the volume is
unmuted before the OSD disappears, the volume will restore. Afterwards,
as described above, the volume is set to 0% each time and must then be
increased manual
