After a reboot I got a message instead of the cursor: Something (I can't
remember exactly what is was) failed and I should issue " systemctl status
sddm.service " to examine the situation.
The output showed, that sddm.service was requesting the contents of the
/etc/X11/default-display-manage
When starting lightdm from console I am able to login to the GUI. So no
greeter is called from the boot / init process. I have a
/sbin/init/splash (with pid 1) running all the time. Maybe this is the
reason why it hangs?
