This seems to be the case, when I disable special effects in compiz, the
dialog window sizes itself correctly again.

Does this only happen if you compiz enabled eg
(System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects) set to something other
than None. If set to None does the bug go away? I think this is probably
a bug exposed by compiz, but isn't actually a bug in compiz itself.
