Logging in using a gnome failsafe gives me a working desktop as well and
it uses display :0
Even if this is GDM/GNOMEs fault for not using display :0 is it still a
bug that DRI is disabled on display :1?

no :1.log, which is strange. I've also uninstalled compiz (apt-get
uninstall compiz) and that hasn't made much difference.
Here's what I'm seeing:

I'm posting from the live CD now, and although performance seems better,
AGP isn't working so DRI is disabled. This may because XAA is being
