i can confirm this bug appears in karmic beta
"inhibit power management daemon during playback" is checked in Tools ->
Preferences -> Show settings (All) -> Advanced settings
$ vlc --version
VLC media playe
Previous version (jaunty) worked fine, now with karmic koala alpha 3
this ploblem has appeared.

vlc player can't control power-managment setting. if you wan't to use
vlc player you need to set it up in System > Settings > Powemanager ( or
some thing like this , i don't use english version )
