I have since upgraded to Hardy so I'm sure those logs are long gone.

I figured out the problem. The config file parsing in the postinst
script is very fragile. If you place spaces around the colin like this:
mailhub=sasl.smtp.pobox.com : 26
Then the postinst script will fail with a mysterious message. The
solution is to remove the spaces:
mailhub=sasl.smtp.pobox.
I'm getting a similar failure on ubuntu 08.04.
