on my current systems (hardy amd64 and intrepid i386) I don't experience
any problems with vlc.

Your problem looks a lot like one I ran into using the debian-multimedia
versions of the libavcodec51 and libavformat52 packages:

Try checking and downgrading if applicable. Don't forget to erase
~/.vlc/cache/plugins-*.dat as suggested
