gdal (2.0.2+dfsg-5) switches to the external json-c, and will be
available in Debian unstable soon.
It will take some time for this change to find its way into Ubuntu,
unless someone backports the changes to the GDAL 1.11.x packages in
Ubuntu.

Small add:
gdal depend of json-c from liblwgeom. Why not using external libjson for
gdal itself ?
$ lddtree /usr/lib/libgdal.so | grep -C 3 json
