I also get the same error when running the update-manager from the
command line but only if I run it as root from the start.

The same here, only I had left only 723 updates after starting the
upgrade process; the update process would start and package manager was
loaded, but it produced the message that it couldn't continue because
the upgrade process hadn't been finished... and that was about as much I
got from it.

I have a similar problem, the upgrade process from web will freeze at
'reading cache' phase and upgrading from the alternate CD will crash at
'checking package manager'.

I read them myself just now and it may be my fault, it seems the ubuntu-
desktop package has some conflicts I will clear them up and see if it
fixes things. I forgot that a while ago I manually installed a deb of
the version 5 bittorent which conflicted with it.
