Forgot to add..
Compiz-gnome was installed. Emerald not which was installed and used
when running Feisty. In Feisty the trevino repository was used. I'll
try completely removing compiz and reinstalling again to see if that
helps. On Feisty I've also had occasions where fusion-icon failed but
i
'compiz --replace &' returns back with borders as normal
it is 'fusion-icon &' that comes back without borders. The output shown is
first of fusion-icon and then compiz --replace

Compiz _does_ launch metacity if it cannot be started. It sounds like
you don't have a decorator installed. Make sure one of compiz-gnome,
compiz-kde, or emerald is installed. As please attach the output from
'compiz --replace'
