I've been running 8.10 for a couple of weeks now (actually since the day
after it was released - 10/31/08) and I have not seen this issue
reappear. I'm still running the same hardware as when I posted to this
thread on 10/20/07.
Thanks.

I am not running 8.10 yet, probably won't get to upgrade for another
week or two.
I assume you want me to test on the same hardware as 7.10
thanks

This happens when you're trying to install nspluginwrapper -i
from a symlink. I think.
I did what vwingate said, and then make sure is
/usr/lib32/nsbrowser/plugins/libflashplayer.so or whatever the 32-bit
plugin directory is.

I followed the steps above posted by wingate and after reopening
firefox, flash worked. However, after restarting X, it no longer worked
(where a flash image should be, I only get a white box):
Here are more details:

I had the same problem on AMD64. I posted this fix that worked for me
over here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nspluginwrapper/+bug/152583
1) Uninstall flashplugin-nonfree if installed through synaptic.
2) Get a list of any Flash remains with nspluginwrapper -l

I have two related problems:
Opera 9.5 for 64 bits crashes when loading flash pages:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/opera/+bug/153848
This one with workaround fix: Firefox gives a segmentation fault (core
dumped) error and doesn't start:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefo
I have this exact same problem. I'm running gutsy on 64-bit as well.
It happened after the recent update as the original poster stated.
Here's the error when launched with safe-mode:

Hi Alexander,
It does indeed cause the same errors ("[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ firefox -safe-mode
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so
[/usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32]

Can you reproduce this issue? Maybe it doesn't happen when you run
firefox in safe-mode like:
# firefox -safe-mode
?
Further, please look in /var/crash and submit the crash report.
Thanks,
- Alexander
