This problem is fixed for me in the latest Gutsy. When Failsafe X comes
up after broken mouse driver entry, pressing "Continue" starts failsafe
GDM correctly with working mouse.

now I look at the failsafe xorg.conf (there are several, but all the
same), the driver for the mouse is "mouse". But still the failsafe X
server did not come up.
The timestamp on the files indicate this was last thursday (October 4).

I used the beta iso to install, but gutsy was uptodate at the time (last
week). Definitely befor the fix.
I did indeed see something in the gutsy-changes list that looked like a
fix for this. Will retest this tomorrow or so.

provided sufficient information to investigate it.
Please attach the relevant xorg.conf files, and indicate which version
of Gutsy you used. If you did not use today's ISO image, please re-test
