I have almost the same situation except that I have two independent screens.
And I've got the same error message.
The resolution of one of them (default screen) is 1280x800, another is 1024x768.
I also have to use i810, because new "intel" driver crashes with current
configuration.

Guys, looks like the problem isn' t all about the 2048 limitation. I
moved the screen up, so I get a 1440x1924 reslution. And I have this

A more friendly message could be shown instead of "Desktop effects could

resolutions up to 2048x2048."

Oh no!! I was so exited about having dual heads for the first time!!

I searched the internet, but I coudn't find clear and reliable
information about this 2048 limitation. Is it a hardware limitation, or
the issue might be worked out sometime ?
Please let me know, I like 3d effects too much
Gert is mostly right. It is in fact a hardware restriction. GL contexts
can't exceed a fairly small resolution (eg. 2048x2048) on some Intel
chipsets. We can't do anything to work around that.

AFAIK there is a restriction in the driver, that the virtual desktop may
not exceed 2048x2048, otherwise dri will be disabled. Maybe that's your
problem.
