X broken by -13 kernel, -12 still OK
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/149929
Recent updates seem to have fixed the problem on this computer.
Probably fixed by updating xserver-xorg-video-intel to 2:2.1.1-0ubuntu6.
Now the 2.6.22-13-generic kernel and X are OK.

I have the same problem, my dmesg is similar to above. I opened bug
150099 for this - didn't see this one.
I tried the -server kernel also: same error. This also happens with 64
bit Gutsy with the -13 kernel, but I haven't tested an earlier kernel
there.

For what it's worth, I see a similar difference in dmesg output here also
between -12 and -13 kernels.
X keeps trying and failing to start in "normal" mode, falls back into some kind
of low-rez "safe" mode.
I captured the dmesg.13 by clicking "shut down" and falling into a root,
text-mode shell.

I have the same problem. And I see a difference in dmesg. I absolutely
don't understand it, but it may help.
With 2.6.22-12-generic:
[ 62.699649] input: Power Button (FF) as /class/input/input5
[ 62.699773] ACPI: Power Button (FF) [PWRF]
[ 62.700350] input: Power Button (CM) as /class/input
Sorry, that's probably wrong, didn't see you're on an intel chipset.

This is probably a bug in the upgrade, make sure you have linux-
restricted-modules-2.6.22-13-generic installed.
When my kernel upgraded the upgrader did not upgrade this package which
provides:
- madwifi (Atheros)
- fglrx (ATI)
- nvidia
- fcdsl2, fcdslsl, fcdslslusb, fcdslusb, fcdslusb2, fcp
