I finally found a solution. Run the following command in a terminal:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Select the appropriate options and then whoopsy, screens and graphics
now work again - hurray!

I have a similar problem: Configured my second screen to display a clone
of my main screen, which caused the main screens resolution to be "out
of bounds" (I could scroll around to find the borders of the resolution
with the mouse). Displayconfig-gtk won't start after this setup. I get

Similar problem here, but no error message is displayed, the applet just
doesn't appear. It may be unrelated, but this seems to have started
after I used the applet to set the graphic effects up to the highest
setting. After doing so I was having problems with window and/or menu
contents not gettin
