i have disabled the new messages notifcation because it more often than
not distracted me from the work i was really working on. from my point
of view this does not need to be investigted further.

It's still happening with me in 2.0.0.17 from an up-to-date Hardy. I'm
having desktop effects enabled and would like to keep it that way. I
rarely use Rythmbox so that won't be the problem.

it's happening with version 2.0.0.12 (20080227) from an up-to-date gutsy.
desktop effects are disabled, i have an ati card (with fglrx).
i have rhythmbox running nearly all the time, i'll ceck if it happens without
rhythmbox, too.

As i recall this was an issue with upstream pre-release
Thunderbird-2.0.0.0 but was fixed by beta release. Does this happen only
with rythmbox playing, are you using desktop effects when this occurs if
so can you please turn it off and see if you can reproduce this issue
with latest version of Thun
