I can confirm this bug, but on a fresh installation of gutsy. I reinstalled OO
as described by slyrogue, working. After i reinstalled openoffice.org-gtk it
crashed again. So i tried the standard ubuntu gtk theme: working, no crash.
It seems it has something to do with certain gtk-themes, i use

I had the exact same problem when I'd try to format a cell, whether it
was empty or had data. Here's what I had installed:
Gutsy
OO vers 2.3.0
It appears (to me, anyway) that this may be an issue with configuration
files left over from Feisty. Here's what worked for me:
In a terminal:
sudo ap
Same bug here. Other things from "Format" menu work. It is a major
problem because Calc is now barely usable...

I am able to reproduce this with the latest update of OpenOffice in
Gutsy AMD64. OpenOffice.org also freezes whenever I try selecting
anything from the "Format" menu.
It did work prior to my last update. The version of openoffice.org-core
I now have installed is 1:2.3.0-1ubuntu5
