Because mozilla changed from mozilla-thunderbird, to thunderbird, and
the symlinks didn't all change.

I had the same problem: Kubuntu 7.10, Thunderbird 2.0.0.6, preferred browser:
Firefox (2.0.0.8). Thunderbird didn't open weblinks anymore.

Go to Gnome Control Center/Preferred Applications and set the default

I am also seeing this with evolution on Gutsy

The prefered browser is custom with the command line "mozilla-firefox %s".
Similar for the mail reader.
I now changed that to the Firefox entry and it works again. Was the name of the
binary changed with gutsy?

What version of thunderbird are you using? Please check in
syste,>prefferneces>perferred applications and tell me what browser you have
set in there.the command box as well as perffered browser.
What browser do you have set in sudo update-alternatives --conf
