This bug seems have been fixed in GIMP 2.6.x and 2.4.5. I can "open from
location" without any problem using GIMP 2.6.3 in intrepid-backports,
and with GIMP 2.4.5 in hardy.
This bug should be closed.

The fix for this is trivial. Just change the debian/control file to the
one I've attached. Please apply this, as I agree that opening network
files should be possible in the default installation.

Or if you don't want gnome-vfs, installing gimp-libcurl also works.
Could this be included in (or required by) gimp, then let the gnomevfs
version be optional (for those who are using gnome)?

This is also a problem for those of us who wish to edit files stored on
other machines on a local network.
I just spent around five hundred pounds on a network attached storage
appliance and was not best pleased when I couldn't open files or save to
it from the Gimp... Then I remembered that I've

I don't think this is low-priority because a majority of GIMP users try

My 2 cents: The correct package to install is called "gimp-gnomevfs".
Installing libcurl or gnomevfs alone won't do (at least it didn't work
for me).

Why is this an extra package? I think libcurl/gnomevfs is so basic that
it should be integrated in the "gimp" package.

This problem has been asked about on the official #gimp channel several times.
Is it worth raising the priority?

This is due to gimp-libcurl or gimp-gnomevfs not being installed.
Since "Open Location" is a basic feature, gimp should *depend* instead of
*recommend* gimp-libcurl | gimp-gnomevfs.
It's important to have libcurl first, since gnomevfs depends on gnome
libs, and wouldn't fit KDE users.
