So, it seems the file was corrupted.

having the same issue. also tried to manually run pkg --configure -a,
but it didn't do anything and returned me a clean prompt. i just
replaced by sources.list file with a standard one for feisty and am
trying to redo the upgrade right now =)

This happened to me too.
Some python errors, update manager crashed,
and now, the default boot does not function.
I have to open the grub menu and select the oldest generic line in order to
boot.
It calls itself Gutsy (although it did not complete the install) the gnome hal
splash screen does not
FYI: At last I managed to successfully update to Gutsy so I have now no
possibility to reproduce my problem.
