Good questions. The default setting on the log on screen is "Ubuntu"
(not compiz), whatever that means. Choosing a gnome session works just
fine and invokes a window manager. So this is not a bug in gnome-wm. I
guess that when the default session "Ubuntu" is selected, no window
manager is started a
Which window manager are you using? Metacity or Compiz?
