It seems like turning off the vga=XXX in the kernel line in menu.lst
fixes the problem...

Hi same issue here, I have a nvidia card (GeForce FX 5200)
I reboot my machine and when kernel finishes loading I am at GDM, but
then I try to go to a tty with ++ and I get to a blank
screen and no response to anything, the only thing I can do there is go
back to X
How can I help solving this bug

Sorry about the delay in the response. I'm associating the report to
linux-restricted-modules package, since it provide the nvidia propietary driver
which seems to cause this issue. Could you provide the syslog and/or the dmesg
output, and the output of the following command:
