Looks like the bug is fixed in gutsy, closing, the change is not likely
to be backported to Ubuntu 7.04 which is not a lts version

I installed the gutsy version of gimp (+ essential dependencies as
found by apt). Still didn't work.
Explicitly updated libexif as well. Now works.

I'm suffering from exactly the same symptons with photos taken on my 8
year old Nikon CoolPix 800 camera. Example picture at:

libexif12 version is 0.6.13-5ubuntu0.2
