the interface choice ...
i can choose between OGL 3.1, 2.0 and XRender (i got compositing disabled
most of the time)

@spear: How are you determining KDE compositor OpenGL version apart from
kinfocenter?
After some research, my OpenGL 2.x issue may be due to the fact that r300
doesn't fully support GL_ARB_texture_non_power_of_two:

just checked my dmesg output for other reasons and noticed this after
the kinfocenter opengl-module related crash:

was there when migrating from plasma 4 to plasma 5 .. its not there anymore
