OK, this looks like a regression in GTK2.
I have installed Ubuntu MATE 14.04 on i386. All works fine. I then add
the following PPA where I have backported GTK 2.24.26-0ubuntu1 from
Vivid.

I now experience the exact same crashe
I have 15.04 running on two partitions of two laptops; one an older i386
and the newer an AMD64. I experience the bug on the former upon every
boot but not at all on the latter.
Neither have the PPA crazy-mate installed.

@stevecook172001 Are you sure you mean 14.04? Please post the output of
`lsb_release -a` on the affected computer.
If you are indeed running 14.04, can you tell me if you have the
following PPA enabled?
* https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mate-dev/+archive/ubuntu/crazy-mate
If you are running 14.0
should add, am using i386

Yep, I am using ubuntu mate 14.04. Notification area crashes on every
login. Has to be reloaded. Usually fine for rest of session, but about
10% of time crashes again during session
