I've observed that +Space actually works when space is pressed
very rapidly after . The delay must not exceed roughly half a
second.

I am on 14.10 and had some additional problems
Space works ~50% of the time
Escape does not work at all
XF86Search (Special Key) gets launcher stuck into permanent 'Shortcut Hints
